People often ask what NC East Alliance does.
It’s a fair question, because our work spans several areas that are shaping Eastern North Carolina’s future. We are often described in terms of workforce development, education partnerships, regional planning, or business recruitment.
The truth is that each of those answers captures a piece of what we do, but none of them quite explains why we exist.
At its heart, NC East Alliance believes in Eastern North Carolina, its people, its ingenuity, its work ethic, and its future.
If you’ve spent any time in Eastern North Carolina, you’ve probably noticed that it resists easy descriptions. One county may be talking about aerospace while another is expanding healthcare. Along the coast, marine manufacturing and the Blue Economy are creating new possibilities. Elsewhere, agriculture continues to evolve through new technology, manufacturers are growing, and community colleges are building programs to meet tomorrow’s workforce needs. Twenty-nine counties. Countless strengths. One remarkably diverse region.
None of that is accidental. Eastern North Carolina has never lacked hardworking people, innovative employers, or communities willing to invest in their future. The opportunities are already here.
Yet if that’s true, an important question remains.
How can employers be searching for skilled workers while students remain unaware of careers just a few miles from home? How can educators work tirelessly to prepare the next generation while businesses struggle to find the talent they need? How can communities all be investing in the future, yet sometimes feel as though they’re solving these challenges on their own?
Too often, the people creating opportunity and the people looking for it simply aren’t connected as well as they could be.
That’s where our work begins.
Our mission is to strengthen Eastern North Carolina by connecting people, education, and employers to support thriving communities and local industries for the long term. That work takes many forms. Sometimes it means helping employers and educators build career pathways together. Sometimes it means using regional data to identify where opportunities exist and where investments can have the greatest impact. Sometimes it means helping the right people find one another. And sometimes it means telling the stories of people who call this region home.
I’ve always believed Eastern North Carolina’s greatest strength isn’t found in any single industry, employer, or institution. It’s found in the way this region has always responded to challenges: by working together. We share ideas. We borrow what works. We pick up the phone. We introduce people. We solve problems together.
That’s why I remain so optimistic about our future.
This is a pivotal moment for Eastern North Carolina. Employers are investing. Industries are evolving. Community colleges are expanding programs to meet new workforce needs. Communities are thinking differently about how they prepare the next generation. The decisions we make today will help determine whether more young people see this region as a place to leave, or as a place to build a career, raise a family, and lead the future.
That future won’t be shaped by any one organization, and it certainly won’t be shaped by NC East Alliance alone. It will be shaped by employers willing to partner with educators. By community leaders who think beyond county lines. By teachers who help students see what’s possible. By parents who encourage their children to explore the opportunities growing right here at home. And by neighbors who continue doing what Eastern North Carolina has always done best: investing in one another.
So, what does NC East Alliance do? We help align the people and organizations shaping Eastern North Carolina’s future. By bringing together employers, educators, community colleges, and regional partners, we’re building a more connected workforce ecosystem that creates opportunity, supports business growth, and strengthens communities.
