Four Year Institutions



East Carolina University located in Greenville, is the premier educational and research institution serving eastern North Carolina. ECU is a Doctoral II research intensive university and an important partner in the economic development of the  Region. East Carolina University is a center for education and medicine for communities throughout the Region, and contributes to the culture of the Region through its popular performing arts series, a successful intercollegiate athletics program, and numerous educational and recreational events. The Brody School of Medicine, and the College of Arts and Sciences provide intensive learning experiences using the latest instructional techniques and technology.

Engineering coursework at ECU encompasses the breadth of modern engineering practice with courses in Civil, Mechanical, Mechatronics, Electrical Power, Electronics and Communications, Instrumentation Control & Automation, and Computer Systems engineering. The School is committed to pursuing excellence in all of its endeavors, with a strong focus on teaching and learning and world-class facilities to support its activities. Both Undergraduate and Graduate degrees are available in Engineering, Engineering Science, as well as the Bachelors of Technology and Doctor of Philosophy degrees.

Chowan University, located in Murfreesboro, is a small, private university of about 1,200 students. The mission of Chowan is to provide their students the ability to excel in the 21st century workforce while instilling them with Christian values. Recently the school opened its School of Graduate Studies, allowing students to pursue a master's degree at this respected institution.

University of Mount Olive, located in Goldsboro, is a private liberal arts college offering programs designed to meet the needs of a diverse student population.  Mount Olive College enrolls more than 3,300 students annually at its seven locations, including Goldsboro, Jacksonville, New Bern, Wilmington and Washington in the Region.

4-Year Colleges

Barton College located in Wilson, is a private 4-year liberal arts institutional and academic community of approximately 1,300 students and 200 faculty and staff. Nationally recognized for its programs in education, deaf education, nursing and social work and its championship men's athletic teams.

Mid-Atlantic Christian University, located in Elizabeth City, is a private university that seeks to impact the world by transforming ordinary people into extraordinary Christian leaders. The academic program is organized into two schools - the School of Undergraduate Studies and the School of Professional Studies.

North Carolina Wesleyan College enrolls about 2,200 students; 900 students in its traditional degree programs at its Rocky Mount campus in Nash County and another 1,300 students in the evening college programs.

Satellite Campuses

Eastern North Carolina is home to several satellite campuses of 4-year institutions based outside the region:

UNC-Chapel Hill Institute of Marine Sciences Located in Morehead City, studies at this campus center on marine biology, ecological studies, and related fields.

Duke University Nicholas School of Environment and Earth Sciences Also in Morehead City, the marine lab for the Nicholas School is utilized by students at all levels of collegiate studies.

NC State University Center for Marine Sciences and Technology Located on the Intracoastal Waterway near Beaufort, CMAST pursues multi-disciplinary research and learning on issues relating to the coastal environment.

Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University Via on-site classroom instruction and distance learning, Embry-Riddle offers undergraduate and graduate courses in several aeronautical fields at its Goldsboro campus.

Central Michigan University CMU has been helping adult learners across the nation for more than 30 years. Here in the Region, CMU offers a variety of graduate level degrees; including information and resource administration and education, from Lenoir Community College in Kinston and on Seymour Johnson Air Force Base in Goldsboro.
