Message from the Chairman

During the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, NC East, like many others saw a slowdown in its traditional organizational activities. This gave the NC East Board time to talk with allies, time to access regional strengths and weaknesses, and time to refocus its operations. We are now:

1. Supporting our existing industries.

Assisting with workforce deficiencies, recruiting missing industry suppliers.

2. Expanding our successful STEM East education initiative.

3. Continuing targeted company recruitment.

4. Leading regional advocacy.

NC East is a convenor of stakeholders who identify, discuss, and support important regional issues and pursue solutions.

This first newsletter will focus on our recent advocacy activities. Although some challenges are highlighted, our board believes that a group of “energized partners” can move our NC East region forward. Let’s make a difference and be problem solvers – together.

Across nearly every industrial and commercial supply chain, disruption is front and center. Even innovation may be a disruptor as industries shape shift to fit the new normal. Industries across eastern North Carolina from advanced manufacturing to transportation, material handling and logistics live in the world of international trade and economic development where tariffs and policy shifts join the ranks of disruptors. There’s a lot going on in industrial supply chains in our region to say the least.

(GREENVILLE, NC) –

On Thursday, October 29 it was announced that STEM East has been awarded a 2020 STEMx Challenge Grant. The grant award is for $10,000 to fund a new program expanding STEM education in eastern North Carolina.

With support from the North Carolina Science, Mathematics, and Technology Education Center, STEM East will launch a museums@home program. Students in the program will connect with regional museums having specific areas of expertise such as the Aurora Fossil Museum and Sylvan Heights Bird Park. Each museums@home implementation will include classroom activities that culminate with a virtual Family STEM Night to celebrate and share student activities while exploring the wonders of our museums.

“The museums@home project highlights the efforts of STEM East to grow collaborative conversations between our regional museums, school districts, after-school programs, and libraries” says Bruce Middleton, Director STEM East. “We believe in the power of STEM educators working together closely in preparing students for life, work, and leisure in our local communities.”

STEM East was one of three leading STEM organizations to receive the grant. The other two grant awardees were the Idaho STEM Action Center and the Indiana STEM Ecosystem. Once all three organizations have completed their respective programs, they will share plans, resources, and lessons learned with the national STEMx network of 24 organizations in 19 states.
