Eastern North Carolina – On Saturday March 22 and Sunday March 23, educators from across eastern North Carolina gathered at D.H. Conley High School in Greenville for a day of hands-on learning, inspiration, and innovation during the STEM East FIRST Robotics Investigation and Awareness Workshop. This immersive professional development event, hosted by STEM East, is a major step forward in expanding access to FIRST Robotics programming throughout the region.

Led by Julia Wagner, Director of Education & Programs for FIRST North Carolina, and Dr. Bill McClung, Professor at East Carolina University’s College of Engineering and Technology and long-time FIRST coach, the workshop provided aspiring coaches with practical training to help launch robotics teams in their own schools. Educators from 13 different schools across the STEM East network participated in this inaugural event, representing a broad commitment to expanding STEM opportunities for students in rural and underserved communities.

“STEM education is crucial to preparing students for the future workforce, and robotics programs like FIRST provide an incredible opportunity for hands-on learning,” said Dr. Patrick Miller, Director of District Engagement & Support for STEM East. “By equipping educators with the tools to lead these teams, we are opening doors for more students to participate in robotics competitions, develop critical problem-solving skills, and explore careers in engineering and technology.”

This workshop is part of STEM East’s broader initiative to grow FIRST Robotics programs in high schools throughout the 29-county NC East Alliance region. The event featured robot demonstrations, guidance on team organization and fundraising, and connections with current coaches and mentors. Attendees also received invitations to attend a live FIRST Robotics competition the following day, providing them with firsthand insight into the energy and teamwork that define these events.

NC East Alliance and STEM East are proud to support this effort with funding assistance and continued professional development, ensuring educators have the resources they need to spark interest in robotics and engineering in their classrooms. With overwhelming interest in this initial session, plans are already underway for future workshops and expanded support.

For more information on upcoming FIRST Robotics events, team startup support, or how to bring STEM East initiatives to your school, contact Dr. Patrick C. Miller (pmiller@nceast.org).

Eastern North Carolina – November 25, 2024 – NC East Alliance’s education and workforce development initiative, STEM East, has proudly announced its pivotal role in expanding the mock trial program for high schools in the region. Partnering with the North Carolina Mock Trial Program and the North Carolina Chief Justice’s Commission on Professionalism, STEM East recently provided funding to launch seven new mock trial teams across eastern North Carolina, raising the total number of teams in the region from five to twelve.

Patrick Miller, Assistant Director of STEM East, expressed his enthusiasm for the initiative, stating, “I am pleased that STEM East has been able to deliver critical financial support for high schools in our region to start Mock Trial teams. These teams provide opportunities for our students to develop their public speaking and critical thinking skills, as well as enabling students to gain the civic understanding, self-confidence, analytical reasoning, and communications skills that are vital for our region’s future leaders.”

Mock trial programs provide students with real-world insights into the judicial process, enhancing critical skills essential for future workforce success. Through these programs, students learn the art of public speaking, develop logical reasoning abilities, and engage in team-building exercises that prepare them for diverse career paths. The skills gained through mock trial participation complement STEM East’s mission to guide local talent toward local career opportunities by fostering a well-rounded skill set applicable to various industries, including law, public service, and beyond.

The expansion was achieved in close collaboration with NC Mock Trial Executive Director Jerry Smith and Jimbo Perry, Executive Director of the North Carolina Chief Justice’s Commission on Professionalism (CJCP). Their shared commitment to cultivating student potential has ensured that eastern North Carolina students will benefit from enriched educational experiences. The schools that received funding to start a Mock Trial program are Mattamuskeet School, Ocracoke School, Perquimans High School, Hertford High School, Northside High School, Washington High School and Bertie County Schools.

Jerry Smith says “We are excited to expand our program into new areas and new public schools in Eastern North Carolina. With the help of STEM East and the CJCP, we are now able to reach students in areas considered legal deserts. In addition to the benefits mentioned by Dr. Miller, our hope is that some students enjoy their experience in court enough that they may one day pursue a career in law and return to their hometowns to practice.”

Pamlico Community College has announced that they are joining the STEM East Network. Pamlico is the 11th Community College to join the network which includes 29 school districts in eastern North Carolina. The growing consortium is an initiative of NC East Alliance that aims to better connect economic development, workforce development, education, and industry in eastern NC. “One of the main goals of this initiative is to build awareness of what job opportunities exist in eastern NC and to train people for those opportunities. Our Community Colleges are an important partner in helping us achieve that goal” said Wesley Beddard, STEM East Consultant.

“We are thrilled to join with regional partners in advancing this important initiative,” said PCC Acting President Michelle Willis-Krauss. “We are excited about advocating for STEM education and ensuring students know about the STEM-based career opportunities available for them in this region. The STEM East Network also will bring professional development opportunities for our instructors. Pamlico is happy to be on the team.”

There are 9 opportunities this summer for teachers and community college staff to learn about the job and training opportunities available within the region in a variety of industry clusters. These Industry In Schools Cluster Workshops will be hosted at STEM East member community colleges throughout eastern NC. The workshops will highlight 6 regional industries which are Health Science; Aviation; SmartAg; Blue Economy; Green Energy; and BioPharma. During these 2-day workshops, participants will learn about the assets available at community colleges that help train the workforce for local job opportunities. They will also leave prepared to take the information they learn and incorporate it into their respective classroom settings.

For more information on the Industry In Schools Cluster Workshops, please visit https://www.stemeast.org/indsch. Industries located in eastern North Carolina are invited to participate in industry dinners that will be held the first night of each workshop. This will be an opportunity to network with local teachers, community college staff, and to learn how you can get involved in growing the workforce and economy of eastern NC.

Greenville, North Carolina – January 19, 2024 – Today, over 300 gathered to attend the second annual Vision 2024 conference at the East Carolina University Main Campus Student Center hosted by NC East Alliance. The day was centered around the STEM East Industry In Schools Initiative which is a 29 county partnership between schools, community colleges, and industry. Dr. Michael Waldrum, CEO of ECU Health, Dean of the Brody School of Medicine, and NC East Alliance Executive Board Member welcomed the crowd with “If you want to have healthy communities, the best way to do so is to educate those communities”.

The STEM East Industry In Schools Initiative is based on four pillars of work. Those four pillars are STEM Schools of Distinction (SSOD), Industry In Schools Clusters, Advanced Technological Education (ATE), and Regional Career and Job Fairs. “This program is being invented and implemented for the purpose of stopping the export of our most valuable resource, our homegrown workforce.” said Todd Edwards, Chairman of the NC East Alliance Board of Directors. The program currently has 29 schools districts and 10 community colleges signed on in NC East Alliance’s 29 county region.

“In my day-job, we work in 30 states. NC East Alliance is the only regional economic development group in the nation focusing on the teachers as a workforce.” said Greg Payne, BelleJar Foundation. NC East Alliance received a $1.6 million grant from the BelleJar Foundation which is the largest investment the foundation has made.

Dr. Laura Ullrich, Senior Regional Economist with The Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond was the keynote speaker for the day providing an economic update. Dr. Ullrich highlighted data that showed many of the eastern NC counties have a declining population. “Future workers need to know there are good, well-paying, in-demand jobs in their communities. Companies need to know that the community has a workforce that is present, trained, and ready to work.” said Dr. Ullrich. Emphasizing the need for the STEM East Industry In Schools Initiative.
