Secondary Education In The Eastern Region.

Public school enrollment in the Eastern Region is approximately 150,000, including both public systems and public charter schools.

There are 13 primary school districts, all of which are involved in annual school improvement initiatives. Every system offers one or more advanced placement courses in subject such as chemistry, calculus and English.

Schools begin working with students at the ninth grade level to determine career paths or vocational areas of interest, and then guide students toward the course selections that will best prepare them for achieving their career goals upon graduation.

Vocational Training

The Region’s public school systems offer a wide variety of vocational training programs at the high school level. Most fall into the following categories:

  • Business/Information Technology
• Family and Consumer Sciences
• Agriculture
• Heath Occupations
• Computer/Network Engineering
• Maintenance Programs

Much of the vocation training at the high school level is conducted off-site at either a community college or an actual job site. The state encourages “dual enrollment” in which students receive both high school and college credit for vocational courses taken at a community college.
Vocational training also includes job shadowing, on-site internships (usually unpaid and not regulated by the NC Dept of Labor) and apprenticeships (paid positions).

Charter Schools.

These are public schools operated by local leadership groups (parents, non-profits, etc.). Charter schools provide more local autonomy, and often focus on particular student target groups, or on a specific core curriculum, such as the performing arts or technology skills. There are eight charter schools in the Eastern Region, with a combined enrollment of about 2200 students for the 2004-05 school year.

Private Schools.

There are many private schools located throughout the Eastern Region. Some are elementary only; others are K through 12.
