Four-Year Colleges And Universities.
     
  Four-year institutions in North Carolina’s Eastern Region include a major state university and three private liberal arts colleges.  
     
  East Carolina University located in Greenville, is the premier educational and research institution serving the eastern part of North Carolina. With the third largest enrollment among the state’s universities, East Carolina is a Doctoral II research intensive university and an important partner in the economic development of the Eastern Region. East Carolina University.

ECU And Economic Development.
 
The Regional Development Institute (RDI) has been providing economic and community development services and conducting applied research in eastern North Carolina since its founding in 1964.
   
Center for Applied Technology (CAT) works for business and industry in eastern North Carolina, developing and implementing training and services programs.
   
Office of Technology Transfer (OTT) facilitates the commercialization of University inventions including patent protection and licensing arrangements and contracts.
   
Small Business and Technology Development Center (SBTDC) is the primary organization through which the State provides business development and technical assistance to the business community.
   

The manufacturing program of the Industrial Extension Service of NC State University brings together the combined resources of NC State University and East Carolina University to assist manufacturers in eastern North Carolina.

   
Student Internship Opportunities: Regional Development Services (RDS) offers opportunities for ECU graduate and undergraduate students to gain practical working experience.

Satellite Campuses In The Eastern Region.
 
The Eastern Region is home to several satellite campuses of 4-year institutions based outside the region:
 
UNC-Chapel Hill Institute of Marine Sciences Located in Morehead City, studies at this campus center on marine biology, ecological studies, and related fields.
   
Duke University Nicholas School of Environment and Earth Sciences Also in Morehead City, the marine lab for the Nicholas School is utilized by students at all levels of collegiate studies.
   
NC State University Center for Marine Sciences and Technology Located on the Intracoastal Waterway near Beaufort, CMAST pursues multi-disciplinary research and learning on issues relating to the coastal environment. The Center’s NCSU Seafood Laboratory is an important resource to those involved in the aquatic foods industry.
   
Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University Via on-site classroom instruction and distance learning, Embry-Riddle offers undergraduate and graduate courses in several aeronautical fields at its Goldsboro campus.
   
Central Michigan University CMU’s Master’s Program offers graduate level courses in general administration on site in Goldsboro.

Small Business And Technology Development Centers.
 
SBTDCs are a business development service of The University of North Carolina, operated in partnership with the federal SBA. The Centers help both existing business owners and individuals interested in starting new businesses. There are 17 SBTDC offices across the state, each affiliated with a college or university. Services provided by the Centers include:

Business Research
Government Procurement
Export Financial Services
Marine Trades
Technology Commercialization and SBIR (Small Business Innovation Research program)

SBTDCs have manufacturing specialists on staff to help companies streamline operations, develop and market new products, and utilize and commercialize technology

SBTDCs provide customized market research assistance, including target market and detailed competitor analyses that enable companies to strategically position themselves within their market.

Most services are free of charge. According to the SBTDC, companies who use their services experience 11.9% more job growth and 38% more sales growth than the average small business in North Carolina.

Regional Development Institute.
 
The Regional Development Institute is a part of ECU’s consolidated Regional Development Services, and is the way that local governments and non-profits access the vast resources of the University system. RDI staff can provide educational training, work with communities and counties on planning and development, help identify grant funding, and a myriad of other services. RDI also has extensive resources available to assist with statistical research in many different areas.
