  Opportunities in Life Sciences.

North Carolina ’s Eastern Region anchors the eastern end of a sixty-mile corridor populated by internationally acclaimed academic institutions, medical schools, healthcare facilities, biotech organizations and pharmaceutical manufacturers. Anchoring the western end of the corridor is the world renowned “Research Triangle” and the resources of UNC-Chapel Hill, NC State and Duke University.

The academic heart of the Eastern Region is East Carolina University, a Doctoral II research facility and its allied schools of medicine and nursing, plus a cardio-vascular center known as a world leader in the development of minimally invasive robotic heart surgery. Linking the university and our K-12 institutions is the nationally recognized North Carolina Community College System with major training programs in healthcare and biopharma manufacturing, plant maintenance and construction.

The Eastern Region is home to major production facilities for a number of leading companies in the field of medical and healthcare manufacturing, including Hospira (formerly Abbott Labs), Merck, DSM and Lenier. A supporting infrastructure, including the headquarters of a 29 county regional healthcare provider, University Health Systems of Eastern North Carolina, provides opportunities for clinical training and testing of new drugs, medical devices and procedures. Contract Research Organizations are also located within the Region and in close proximity.

  North Carolina Biotechnology Center.
The NC Biotechnology Center is a world leader in its support of biotechnology research, business, and statewide education programs. The Center has an Eastern North Carolina regional office in Greenville. East Carolina University and the Brody School of Medicine.
With nearly 23,000 students, ECU is the third largest member of the Greater University of North Carolina system. A Doctoral II research intensive university, ECU provides many research opportunities and personnel resources valuable to pharmaceutical and medicine manufacturing companies.
Brody School of Medicine – Begun in 1975, the School of Medicine annually matriculates 72 new students in the medical school and has a permanent staff of 1,400 people, including 390 clinical physicians or scientists. Over 250 physicians pursue post-graduate training in the School’s nine medical residency programs annually. Other opportunities include doctoral programs in advanced areas such as Anatomy and Cell Biology and Biochemistry.
School of Nursing – Established in 1959, the School is now a center of excellence in nursing education, research, and practice in the Eastern Region. The School's academic programs prepare professional nurses as baccalaureate generalists, as specialists for advanced practice at the master's level, and as scientists at the PhD level.
School of Allied Health Sciences – Provides training through nine departments: biostatistics, clinical laboratory science, community health, communication sciences and disorders, health services information management, occupational therapy, physician assistant studies, physical therapy, and rehabilitation studies.
Engineering Curriculum – ECU has accepted its first class of 36 students for their new Systems Engineering Program, and will also offer concentrations in Bio-Engineering and Bio-Medical for the class of 2007- 08.
Office of Technology Transfer – Assists with commercialization of new and innovative products that come through actual research and laboratory work within the University.

Research Laboratories – Literally dozens of types of laboratories and other research opportunities are available through the greater ECU community, including a primate lab.
Clinical Testing Opportunities – Through the Brody School of Medicine, the School of Nursing and the School of Allied Health Sciences, ECU offers varied opportunities to access resources that can be used in clinical testing trials.
Entrepreneurial Initiative – Fosters entrepreneurship within the university community and Eastern North Carolina.
Community College BioNetwork.
The BioNetwork is an initiative that connects community colleges across the state, providing specialized training, curricula and equipment to develop a world class workplace for the biotechnology, pharmaceutical and life sciences industries. The BioNetwork encompasses centers of excellence for workforce training, bioprocesssing, bio-education, pharmaceutical manufacturing, bio-agriculture and bio-business. The Bioprocessing Center is housed in Pitt Community College in Greenville, minutes from East Carolina University.
BioWork Program – 128-hour course designed to provide basic skills needed for entry-level process technician jobs in bioprocess, pharmaceutical and chemical manufacturing.
Bioprocessing I plus I – A 2-year certificate program for those interested in actual manufacturing processes for biotechnology. Graduates of this program can move seamlessly into certain four-year programs in biotechnology offered by East Carolina University or UNC-Pembroke.
BioNetwork Bioprocessing Center – Located in Greenville’s Technology Enterprise Center and affiliated with Pitt Community College, the Center helps develop biotechnology processing programs used throughout the State.
Healthcare Occupations Training – An aggressive and multi-level state-sponsored training program involving the Region’s high schools, community colleges, 4-year colleges and universities, and hospitals. 2 to 4 years of vocational training is offered at the high school level to help students determine which of the health-related fields (clinical, administrative, or maintenance/support) they wish to pursue. A 2-year community college program leads to a Licensed Practical Nursing degree.
Bio-agriculture Research.
Thanks to the deep agricultural roots of the Eastern Region, coupled with today’s emphasis on biotechnology, the Region is home to a number of research facilities focused on bio-agriculture:
