A large and diverse base of manufacturing companies call NC’s
Eastern Region home. And that means expanding and relocating
manufacturers will find an equally large and diverse labor pool
possessing a wide variety of manufacturing skills. Transitioning
personnel from the Region’s numerous military installations provide
an additional source of highly skilled, goal-oriented, and
highly motivated employees. |

Low labor-related costs, excellent transportation resources and
close proximity to Eastern Seaboard and Southern Sunbelt markets
are other factors that make North Carolina’s Eastern Region
a desirable locale for manufacturers. And free or low cost job
training is available through one of America’s most acclaimed
community college systems. |

Following are descriptions of a few of the many manufacturing
sectors that thrive in the Eastern Region. |
|
| |
|
|
| |
Household Goods. The Eastern Region is home to more than
300 firms in this category, many of which are smaller companies
providing products to a niche market, and their numbers are
expected to continue growing at a robust pace. Cabinet and
wood component manufacturers favor the Region for its close
proximity to timber resources and the lumber generated from
companies such as Weyerhaeuser. There are eight sawmills in
the Region, and many others nearby. |

The Eastern Region is also the site of manufacturing facilities for
a number of national brands of appliances and consumer household
products, including those of BSH and Electrolux.
Moen manufactures kitchen and bath faucets here, and Lenox
china is shipped to markets worldwide from their manufacturing
operation in North Carolina’s Eastern Region. |
|
| |
|
|
|
HVAC Equipment. Many companies involved in the manufacture
of heating and cooling equipment and related products are
located in NC’s Eastern Region, most notably Mestek and Field
Controls, along with more than 40 machine shops capable of
providing parts and support services to HVAC manufacturers.
Projections indicate this is a growth industry for the Region in
the coming decade, with employment expected to increase well
beyond present levels. |
|
|
|
|
|
Precision Instruments and Equipment. The manufacture of
precision instruments and equipment requires access to a
skilled workforce. North Carolina’s Eastern Region contains a
considerable pool of skilled labor that is well suited to expanding
and new companies in this industry. There are currently 16
firms in the Region — including Honeywell and Kidde Aerospace— employing 1,400 workers in operations involving the production
of precision tools, electrical and signal testing instruments. |
|
|
|
|
|
Engine Manufacturing. Another growing business sector is the
manufacture of engines and engine parts, which has approximately
2,750 employees in 40+ firms throughout the Eastern
Region. Consolidated Diesel assembles diesel engines in their
facility here. Companies such as Stanadyne and Metaldyne produce
diesel engine parts. |
